As an initiative to support the Digital India program, the government to launch online police verification process for passports by integrating the database of the External Affairs Ministry with the Home Ministry's Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) across the country.

The project is expected to go on floor by November and it would be introduced first in Bengaluru as Karnataka has a robust police database called Police IT. And soon it will spread across whole of India.

There have been lot of complaints regarding the delay in issuing Passport due to delayed verification process. And with this effect, time required for issuing the travel document will come down from a month at present to just a week period.
